Hockey makes sense to Shane Hollander in a way that so much of the world doesn't, and he knows never will.
His understanding of "right" and "wrong" has always been purely academic. Guilt and empathy are things other people feel, and hiding has become second nature. Hockey, though, is predictable; there are rules and patterns and strategies, and Shane learns to read and understand the gameplay like he once taught himself to read and (attempt to) understand other humans.
And then he meets Ilya Rozanov, he witnesses the violence, raw and beautiful, that bleeds from the opponent who is his equal on the ice, and he knows that he will make that broken boy his.

Shane's predisposition to taking pleasure in the discomfort experienced by others doesn't bother him. This is unsurprising, as psychopathy and sadism both require an emotional detachment from the suffering of others. Shane has always understood this fact about himself; despite how they are typically mischaracterised across popular media, the modern, clinical understanding of psychopaths is that they are not ordinarily delusional or psychotic, and Shane likes to think he has a sharp insight into his disorder, and how it impacts on him, his thought patterns, his predilections, and his behaviours.
In and of itself, meeting the clinical criteria for 'antisocial personality disorder' - psychopathy - isn't indicative of a personal or moral failing; Shane didn't choose to be born with a maladaptive condition that severely impairs his decision-making, moral judgement, and social functioning. But that doesn't change the fact that there are abnormalities in his brain structure and function have impacted the fundamental processes of learning and behaviour and influence patterns of learning and motivation that the diverse collection of personality traits that characterise psychopathy develop from.
He is different from other people, he does not think like them, he does not react like them, and he has urges that a person whose neurobiology supported the development of morals, rich and diverse emotions, and an implicit understanding of social constructs could not even imagine. Aggressive behaviour in and of itself isn't abnormal - most people, Shane has observed, seem to have felt the impulse to react violently towards someone who provokes them, and nobody considers this unusual or pathological. It's different, though, when it's not the result of being overwhelmed in a fit of rage, when instead the usual, ordinary social rules are violated in the simple disregard of their existence at the expense of a prolonged plan to achieve a self-serving goal at another's expense.
