Sand's phone starts buzzing again. "Are you fucking kidding me?" he mutters, picking up the phone so he can send the caller to voicemail. Ray's been calling nonstop tonight. The voicemails have piled up while Sand decides if he should simply delete them without listening. But this time, when he picks up the phone, it's an unknown number. He furrows his brow, some unsettled feeling in his gut telling him something is wrong. He answers.
"Hello?"
"Hello, is this—" there's a moment of hesitation, "Sand? Ray Pakorn's emergency contact?"
Cold dribbles down Sand's spine and he answers "yes" without thinking, without considering that he and Ray are broken up.
"We've been trying to reach you. Mr. Pakorn has been in a pretty serious accident."
Ray drives his car into a guard rail and lists Sand as his emergency contact, despite the fact that they've broken up.

Summary
Ray understands his emotions on an intellectual level, of course, but embodying and articulating them are another thing entirely. It's much easier, and safer, to bury them in favour of being single-mindedly goal-oriented, especially in the predominantly white spaces that he used to operate in. It leaves Ray feeling out of his depth when navigating the emotional space between him and Billy.
But planning an experiment methodically? That is in Ray’s wheelhouse, and so getting Billy pregnant is what he turns his attention to.

The soft glow of the match lights up his and Emma's faces, and it spins as it falls, a trail of smoke rising up and curling like the tuft of Emma's hair.
In the end, no matter how much Emma runs, the match is faster.
