Summary
Mike just doesn't know what to think about darkness... about nighttime. On one hand, most things are so much easier to say when you're surrounded by darkness than they are during the day. But on the other, morning is always bound to arrive. That's a certainty... or at least it used to be.
But now? Now it's the apocalypse, and Mike is comfortably seated in his bed, and Will Byers is standing in the doorway to his bedroom looking like an angel who got lost on his way to Heaven and stumbled upon Hell by accident.

my take on what the byler plotline could be like in s5 (ish)! featuring late night talks, flirting as well as fighting, fluff as well as angst, a whole lot of pining, a hella lot of tension, my take on churchgate and chapters from both mike’s and will’s pov!
the title is a lyric from “waco, texas” by ethel cain.
previously titled “my hand was the one you reached for”.
there are a few s5 spoilers in this fic so beware of that before reading!

Summary
For the first time in four years, Will Byers is free. The grip the upside-down had on him has been relinquished, and he and his friends can live out the few months of childhood they have left.
But nothing is quite right: Lucas is but a shell of a person, Dustin has forgotten his girlfriend of two years, and Mike? Mike Wheeler, the heart of the group, has been a ghost of who he was for a long, long time.
And it's not just his old party: Robin, Jonathan, Hopper, Nancy, even his Mom, the same woman who would not rest till she found the truth all those years ago, glaze over their final battle like it was nothing.
A final fight that was too easy, a flickering reality of a town, a heart withering and rotting with grief in his basement. Just like that, Will begins to question just who won that last fight and how exactly he helped Vecna one last time.
