“Eskel is okay.” Jaskier says, and Geralt’s entire body shudders as he releases a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. “The wound on his chest is almost closed. It’ll scar, but Vesemir doesn’t think it’ll be all that bad.” The White Wolf gives a small, hesitant nod. “You saved his life, Geralt. And everyone else’s life, too. If it hadn’t been for your actions, Eskel could’ve hurt a lot of people… and he’s grateful you stopped him from doing so.”
Geralt swallows hard, “Another half an inch to the left, and I would’ve stopped him permanently.” He’s an apex predator—a being specifically designed to hunt and kill. The odds of him accidentally killing Eskel, when he’d only ever intended to temporarily incapacitate him, were uncomfortably high.
Jaskier shakes his head, squeezing Geralt’s hand a little harder, “Yes, but your sword didn’t pierce him another half an inch to the left, now did it?” Geralt hesitantly shakes his head, “We could spend the rest of our lives contemplating what-ifs… that won’t change what happened.”
Jaskier’s heart shatters just a little bit more when he realizes that the White Wolf is shaking, “I hurt him.” He whispers.
