but I kind of want it to turn out that he’s playing Hannibal just as hard as Hannibal’s playing him. I’d like to see that as a fic, that turnaround where it’s Will doing the string pulling and Hannibal only realizes it at that very last second… and can’t help but respect how clever it is.

And it takes all but a few long, slow seconds to realize why taking another breath feels near impossible, because his body gives a violent sway, and he can hear the distinctive sound of Walker barking something beside him, footsteps taking off, kicking dust up against the ground and when Bucky glances downwards at himself, it’s then that he notices the spear of metal protruding right through his chest.
Time moves thickly like molasses. He’s not so sure how long it takes for Karli to dart away and for John to break chase after her, or how long it is between Sam catching the truck and him suddenly being on the ground, cradling Bucky’s head like it’s the most delicate thing on earth.
Bucky blinks and Sam comes into focus. He can’t help but curl his lip around a faint smile.
“Suit looks good on you,” he croaks, watching the worry in Sam’s expression slowly melt away.
“You’ve literally been impaled,” Sam chastises him, careful not to jostle him too much. “Be quiet.”

Ed looks up at another rustle of leaves, then scowls and turns away when he spies the tuft of a rabbit’s tail disappearing behind a tree. He’ll give Stede a while longer. He probably just detoured to grab food for the journey, or hunt down some fancy sheets or oil or whatever the fuck caught his eye. He’ll be here soon.
It’s barely more than a few minutes after Ed makes this decision and resumes his pacing that a gunshot and then a high-pitched scream rings out from the forest, the sounds bouncing between the trees and echoing off the water. Ed spins on his heel, moving to draw his gun, but of course he doesn’t have it. He does have a knife he swiped from the kitchens, and another one that’s really meant for cutting rope that was in the dinghy he stole. Knives are even worse than useless when your enemy has a gun, but some weapons are better than none. He draws the kitchen knife and rushes towards the treeline, his head flooding with worst-case scenarios.
Or: What if Ed heard Chauncy's gunshot and came to find Stede in the woods?
