What she could not know was the additional chemistry involved in those injections , trace amounts of compounds that would create positive psychological associations with his presence, barely detectable euphoric elements that made her seek out their appointments with increasing frequency.
"It's the strangest thing," she mused as he administered the injection with his characteristic gentle precision. "I swear I injure myself constantly throughout the day, but I never seem to have any lasting marks to show for it."
Temperature, Zayne had learned through careful experimentation, influenced human decision-making in ways most people never realized. A degree or two cooler, and plans that had seemed reasonable would begin to feel uncomfortable, ill-advised. A few degrees warmer, and suggestions that might otherwise meet resistance would settle into the mind like seeds finding fertile soil.

Two years later, when signs of life and even civilisation were still detectable inside the shattered city, the government sent the military in to reclaim and rehabilitate Gotham. Gotham has not forgotten, and they have not forgiven either.”
An AU where an altered version of No Man’s Land happened while Bruce was in his late teens/early twenties, and Batman was born in the hellish crucible of a trapped city that was left for dead and then violently retaken. Gotham may pretend to run by mainlander rules for the sake of those who would have died otherwise, but under the surface, Bruce, Jim, Leslie, Ivy and Oswald and their pack keep their own council, and look with jaundiced eyes on the mainland.
