Sidmouth Castle rose before them like something from a storybook—a magnificent pile of honey-colored stone that had been in the Vale family since the 1500s. Towers and turrets punctuated the roofline, mullioned windows glinted in the afternoon sun, and the whole edifice spoke of centuries of history and power.

Viktor’s hand slid up her side, ghosting over her ribs as they adjusted their weight on the crutch enough to raise their other hand to the side of her neck. The touch drew a subtle shiver from Mel, and she could feel herself only growing more delighted for what the rest of the night would bring.
“Who knows when I’ll get another chance to be alone with you, your highness.” Their voice lilted around the words, almost smug, and the way they pressed their face into the crook of Mel’s neck when her breath hitched only confirmed it, smug.
