Kurj Skolia, a warrior haunted by the "Kyle-Web," violently crash-lands on Pern, clawing his way out of the wreckage of his dead ship and scorched armor. Bleeding out, he is discovered by a swarm of telepathic fire-lizards whose cries of "hurt-sad-alone" press into his mind, giving him an anchor to life.
He is found by Sue, a dimensional traveler and Seed-Self, whose Companion Kyrith guides her. Their arrivals coincide with a pivotal Hatching at a Weyr. In a unique convergence, their disparate magics and realities fuse: Kurj is Impressed by the bronze dragon named Branth, and Sue bonds with the gold named Solith. Their new, improbable partnership—anchored by the dragons and the spiritual presence of a Companion—is the one constant in their chaos. Now, the warrior and the traveler must combine their skill with the Weyr's power to ensure the colony’s survival through Thread, danger, and the ongoing struggle for existence.

Summary
Raised to hide her ability to hear dragons, Serana, the daughter of a small Holder in Lemos, knows nothing of Pern but the little corner of it that she's been raised in. So when her abusive Holder sire decides to marry her off to another Holder, she completely turns her life upside down by choosing to run away and become holdless in the hopes that she'll be able to get to a Crafthall before she's caught and returned to her father or her husband-to-be.
When disguising herself as a young man, she finds that she's far more comfortable as 'Jamim' than she ever was as herself, and is eventually able to integrate herself into a traveling caravan under this new persona.
But even the best kept secrets get out, and Lady Holdless Thella is after anyone who can hear dragons to help aid in her own selfish plans.

After a Long Interval, the Fifth Pass has begun. Fort Weyr experiences terrible losses and low morale under Weyrwoman Belia and Weyrleader J'vrex. When a gruesome accident claims Belia's life, Pern's other Weyrleaders task wingleader N'thal of Benden Weyr with investigating Fort Weyr, the Threadfall accident, and the Weyrleader's conduct.
He must ingratiate himself to Fort's riders and outwit Weyrleader J'vrex's suspicions, all before the next queen rises. His own Weyrleaders have designs for him, plans he has little interest in fulfilling. N'thal will do his duty to Benden and to Pern, but as far as he's concerned, courting an alluring but weak weyrwoman is not one of those duties.
