Summary
Steve takes a long sip of his drink. Nat wonders if he’ll finish the whole thing in one draught. “Why do you…” he falters. “Why do you hurt yourself, Nat?”
Nat plays with the lid of her own cup. She takes a sip of her latte, but it tastes like chemicals and bitterness cloaked in saccharine. It’s a lie, just like she is. “I don’t know,” she says quietly. Overall, it’s the truth. She has theories, a lot of them. But she pinpoint the cause when all she can see is the effect. “Why do you want to know?”
“You really want me to tell you?” Steve looks at her, eyebrows raised, lines playing across his forehead. “Or you want me to make up something that makes sense?”
“I told you the real thing.” It’s hard not to throw in attitude. Especially since Nat knows that if she drops the sharp edge, her voice will bottom out completely. She already feels the burn behind her eyes.

The stars are bright over whatever part of America this is — Steve should know, probably, will pay better attention come the morning — and the thing is, he still means it. People thank him at diners and rest stops, Sam’s dropped his whole life to ride along with him and make sure he’s all right, and Steve’s still that flush-cheeked kid huddling against Bucky’s warmth at the edge of the alley; Steve still thought about it, on the helicarrier. Steve thought about forgetting the chip, about letting the missiles fire, because not one of the people they’d kill would matter as much to him as Bucky.
It was just a thought, a small shame in the heat of a terrible moment. Steve knows better than to drive himself crazy about it. But thick on his tongue, it sits: Hey Buck, you remember that I’m a pig-headed loud-mouthed bastard when I wanna be? What about that time I cut your hair with Mrs. Thompson’s scissors, and you met my eyes like you knew I was imagining slicing the throats of every guy who’d ever touched you? C’mon, Bucky, go ahead and hit me again if that’ll help — you’ve gotta remember that I deserve it, or that you do, for all that’s been between us all this time.
“Sorry,” Steve says thickly: to Bucky; to Sam; to the country; to the stars. Sam snores. America sleeps on. The stars glow steadily, undisturbed by his maudlin confession, just one of thousands thrown their way tonight, and Steve closes his eyes.

Summary
In The Avengers, Natasha Romanova says "Love is for children." It's an expression of life as she knows it, and fits the harsh background most of the Avengers have experienced. Trouble is, people don't do very well without love. In particular it's impossible to form a good team if the members don't care about each other.
So Phil Coulson comes up with a teambuilding exercise to resolve that problem. If love is for children ... then he'll arrange that experience for them. The result is an exploration of nonsexual ageplay to allow a group of very powerful, very broken people to patch up some of the gaps in their lives.
Most of the stories are very sweet in tone and make for good comfort reading. However, canon gives these characters some very unpleasant pasts, and that comes up as they process the aftermath. So the tone does vary, and some stories are more intense than others. They deal with different characters, relationships, and sensitive issues.
Some folks have avoided this series for fear that it goes into sexual territory; it doesn't. Same with embarrassment, very low on that.
