Cold air swept in, Arthur only adjusted his papers.
A sleek black cat slipped inside, shaking frost from her fur before padding forward with unhurried familiarity. She brushed against Merlin’s leg first, tail high.
Then she stilled.
Amber eyes fixed on Arthur.
She crossed the room and bumped gently against his boot.
Arthur blinked.
“…Is that Freya?”

Another rumble. Closer now.
Merlin lowered his voice. “Freya. Please. Let me help.”
She finally faced him fully.
And there was no fury in her expression.
Only hurt.
“You think I need guarding.”
“I think I cannot lose you.”
The lion burst from the brush. Instinct took over.
Freya loosed her first arrow, clean, precise. The arrow left her bow in the same breath the beast crossed the clearing. It struck deep, just behind the shoulder. The lion staggered but did not fall, momentum carrying it forward, fury burning brighter than pain.
It charged.

Freya exhaled softly beside him, some tension easing from her shoulders. She leaned forward, pressing her forehead briefly to Merlin’s. Arthur’s chest tightened at the quiet intimacy of it; it wasn’t meant for him, and yet, he couldn’t look away.
“Come back to us,” she murmured.
“I will,” Merlin promised. “I always do.”
Arthur watched them, the way they fit together so easily, so completely. It hurt in the dull, familiar way, manageable, if he didn’t dwell too long on it.

Arthur finds out Merlin has magic. He also finds out how often Merlin risked his life for him and so, he does the only thing he can think of to protect him: banishment.
Hurt and angry, Merlin leaves and swears to not look back.
But, when two years pass and Morgana shows up at Merlin’s door, urging him to fill Gaius’ position as Court Physician, Merlin agrees. He really doesn’t know why, but Arthur is sure Merlin would do just about anything to get on his nerves.
Unprepared for the shock of seeing Merlin back in the castle, Arthur is forced to speed along his plans to lift the ban on magic. But between stubborn councilors, a mysterious plague, a still angry Merlin, and Morgana being Morgana, Arthur is fairly certain he’ll lose his mind before the first year of his reign even ends.

Summary
Merlin comes to Longstead. He is a physician (sort of), a magician (not out loud), a wanderer. What brings him to that particular village at that particular time, is none of these things. He has a task to fulfill, and it's not his destiny. His destiny is not his business.
He’s stretched out on a bank of grass, out beyond the village wall.
Merlin is looking for plants that can be both magical and quiescent, he can make something innocuous seeming, betulia, belladonna. With the right spell, he can prolong the lives of the men and women laid out in village behind him. He will keep to himself just how close to the brink many of the villagers are. He can feel it, the edge of something encroaching, something ending, the smell of flesh.

Merlin pulls another bushel of wormwood from the jar and sets it in the mortar again. He rereads the medicinal text for the fifth time, and then slowly begins crushing the herb again. This time, he envisions folding his magic back into his skin in the way he’s seen Cook fold batter for cakes. Gentle motions in time with the turn of the pestle. The ever present buzz of his magic begins to fade from his ears as he adds drops of pine-sap and watered down honey.
It's only when his magic has subdued somewhat, that he notices the other person in the room.Arthur.

When a mishap sends one of Percival’s partners into Merlin’s care, he decides that as a physician, he has to take a more active role in making sure the man doesn’t accidentally overwhelm any future partners faced with his rather intimidating size. It doesn’t take long before he realizes Percival has a lot to learn.

It’s here he meets a grievously wounded Arthur Pendragon whose scars are not all physical. As Arthur heals bit by bit in both mind and body, learning to walk on his prosthetic leg and all the frustration that comes with it, Merlin sees the good, the bad, and the downright ugly sides of him. Despite this—or perhaps because of it—they grow closer.

Though the two have orbited and tolerated each other for many years in a professional capacity as Court Physician and Court Sorcerer, they have hardly interacted outside of that. After Mordred nearly dies and ends up in the Court Physician's care, the Court Sorcerer decides it's finally time for Merlin to accept that he deserves to be taken care of, too.
