Summary
“My life has been a strange one,” answers Jekyll. There is an undercurrent of some nervous energy in his speech which, in turn, puts Utterson at unease. Despite the direction of the conversation, he would almost believe Jekyll to be a common recluse, judging by his manner. “But yes, I have tried to draw good company around me. It has made my life a good deal more tolerable. Utterson here is living proof.”
Utterson’s stomach clenches. He forces himself to drink.
