Looking back on his childhood, Tanjirou supposes maybe he’s not used to having so much attention on him at one time. His family celebrated birthdays of course, but there was a limit to how much his parents could do with six kids and one flow of income from their lone bakery, that's not even including themselves.
How could Tanjirou ever expect them to focus an entire day on only him?
Instead, he sacrificed countless gifts over the years to share with his siblings, or insisted on no gift at all to make sure they all had a good dinner together.
Eventually, birthdays became… just another day.
