Summary
Cait takes a sip of her drink, and Vi does so similarly. The voices of fate beckon to Caitlyn in her feeble state, urging her that she could be sipping liquid gold instead if she only listened to their guidance.
Caitlyn considers. She’s not usually one to take outside advice, but she’s had a rough couple of days, and figures that Vi probably needs this as much as she does. She relents. In her burnt-out delirium, Caitlyn guides Vi’s head into her lap.
“Dude, what-”
A soft thumb runs along the curve of Vi’s forehead.
“What’d he do?” Caitlyn interrupts. She doesn’t have the bandwidth to explain what’s happening or why.

Vi grins sharply, a dangerous glint in her eyes as she absentmindedly taps away at a rhythm on the shared kitchen’s dining table, her enjoyment of Caitlyn’s frustration as clear as day.
Caitlyn thinks she needs more sleep, or someone to shake her, because she unfortunately thinks this back and forth is… doing it for her. So she ignores the way her cheeks flush, her stomach tight and her jaw tense, as she grabs her leftovers and leaves the kitchen.
(She has unfortunately already indeed thought about banging this drummer.)

“Vi,” Caitlyn says.
Vi freezes, then slowly turns around. “What?” she replies, feigning confusion.
Caitlyn gestures to her newly insulated tent. “Did you…?”
Vi’s jaw tightens, gaze flicking anywhere but Caitlyn’s face. “You were cold last night."
"Yes, but why?"
Vi hesitates. “I didn’t fix it to prove anything,” she mutters. “And I didn’t do it so you’d stay.”
Caitlyn’s heart stutters.
“But,” Vi adds, almost reluctantly, “if you are going to be here… you should be able to sleep.”

Tired of Piltover’s politics and her parents’ expectations, Caitlyn volunteers for a development program on a nearby island (part PR stunt, part research project) in search of something new beyond the only city she’s ever known.

“I’m sorry, I think you’ve got the wrong number,” the woman cut her off.
Vi felt her face go so hot she was sure that it was visibly steaming in the winter air. Of course it was a fucking wrong number - just the cherry on top of an already shit morning. She struggled to conjure up some sort of apology. Instead, what came out was, “Oh. Well, thank god, because I was feeling really bad about yelling at someone who sounds so sexy.”
As soon as the words left her mouth she wished she had a spare hand to cram them back inside. She was considering just abruptly hanging up when a breathy chuckle filtered across the line.
“Awfully bold for someone who’s ranting about cement to a stranger at eight o’clock in the morning.”

But most of all, Vi hated her kindness. It had to be fake—how could it not be? Caitlyn was a born and bred Piltovian, after all, yet somehow managed to be one of the few who actually seemed to tolerate Zaunites. But Vi refused to believe it. It had to be an act.

Vi hesitated, her hand resting on the edge of Caitlyn’s bed. She shrugged, looking away for a moment. “At first? Guilt, I guess. But now…” She met Caitlyn’s gaze, her eyes softening. “I just… I like being here. With you.”

Vi stood up, jammed hands in her pockets, and walked out of the classroom, scowling and catching the glance Kiramman cast at her before she disappeared behind the door. She went straight to the farthest restroom in the hallway, not because she wanted to waste as much time as possible, but because there was her favorite toilet stall. Yeah, right, her favorite toilet stall that was oddly but very specifically important to her.
She opened the door, pulled down the toilet lid, and sat on it. It was one of those whose walls were covered with writings and doodles, and it also had a window. And right there, in a gap between two windowsill tiles, was a rolled-up piece of paper.
She pulled it out, biting her lip and hoping the answer was already there.

No one suspects Vi to love literature. But she does love it, and the only one who understands her is a girl she knows from the school restroom. What once was a simple reply to a poem scribbled in a toilet stall is now a solid friendship. Except Vi still doesn't know who that mysterious girl is, and doesn't even want to. Now it's perfect, and what Piltie girl would want to be friends with her in real life? But hey, fate had other plans.

It all started with a note - written in the ugliest handwriting Caitlyn had ever seen.
"I used your bed. Funny fact, you smell like cupcakes."
In the break room, they had six beds distributed for use among shifts. But Caitlyn's bed wasn't part of that set. No, she had bought a seventh piece of furniture with her own money - with a mattress specifically made for her shoulder and lower back pains.
Everyone knew they shouldn't lie down there. Except, apparently, the new hire.
As a first offense, Caitlyn decided to let it slide, with a simple note on the bed.
"Property of Caitlyn Kiramman."
Maybe the mistake had been due to ignorance, after all. Although, three days later, to her complete displeasure, came her response.
"Good to know you have a name, Cupcake. PS: your mattress is really good."

When they’re unknowingly set up with each other, they both struggle between wanting to being authentic and wanting to stubbornly prove a point, as they’re forced to rely on their personalities to make the relationship work.

Vi scoffed and stomped forward, the gravel crunching beneath her feet as she approached Caitlyn, who looked up at her with an empty, disinterested expression.
She stopped right in front of her, chest puffed out, voice dripping with venom.
