    Having multiple soulmates was something romanticized in stories, but absolutely loathed in practice. Made all the more complicated by the people experiencing it. Every bond was intermingled, looped and knotted up in others. It made the connections murky, the limits hard to grasp. Unfairly proportioned, a gift to some, a curse to others.

    “I just..” he motions up at the MechaMan suit. “I purposely stayed away. Tried to hide away from the bond. I felt like knowing me would only put them in danger. Heroes don't live safe lives. What if one of my enemies went for them because of me?”

    “How about we look at it other way.” Robert frowns “If YOUR soulmate was in danger, would you want them to stay away? Or would you want them to let you help?”

    Summary

    After taking down Shroud alongside his unlikely team of misfits, Robert Robertson III—Mecha Man—finds himself at a crossroads he can no longer ignore.
    With Shroud behind bars, a team to manage, and a city slowly stitching itself back together, he is left with something unfamiliar: space to think. And in that space, he becomes aware of things he used to push aside—things he never had the capacity, or the willingness, to look at before.
    That being said, fifteen years of survival instincts, quiet self-destruction, and compulsive overwork have carved habits into him deeper than scars.

    There was an aura of mystic whisperings around Zhao Qinglin. That surely the weight of future visions untethered him from this earthly coil as it did many Seers. What a crushing responsibility it must be, to subtly shift fate this way and that. How tragic, how sad- this is all reasonable for why Zhao Qinglin ignored the urgent request for the third time in a row! Or perhaps some tragedy was prevented by his non answer...

    That was how simpletons like his fellow Peak Lords rationalized it.

    Shen Qingqiu thought that perhaps Zhao Qinglin was just a lay about. Kan Zhanbu was the tiniest of the twelve Peaks. The last that Shen Qingqiu had heard, the Peak only boasted one Elder, two Masters, and five Disciples- none of this counting Zhao Qinglin himself. Unless he spent all day gazing into the sun, he had more than enough time to pick up a brush and do his job.

    The flap of a butterflies wings can cause storms halfway across the world. How might the winds of destiny shift if a heart is touched?

    Things have been good— besides some lingering regret over not killing Shroud and the careful consolidating of corporatizing Mecha Man with dispatch work, Robert’s been alright. Hell, he even bought a bed recently.

    Things spiral pretty quickly when he’s a victim of some sort of bizarro mugging and gets turned into a cat. Surprisingly, it doesn’t even rank in the top ten worst experiences of his life.
