The thing about it is that, while some people grow into themselves, Kakashi is the sort of person who grew out of himself. He wasn't ever very good at being a child. Gai hadn't noticed it when he was a child himself, but now that he's got a teenage version of his rival on hand to compare with, he's starting to come to some belated realizations. It shouldn't be surprising; who really gets to be a child in a ninja village? But Kakashi was definitely worse at it than most.
He'd feel sympathetic, except for how the cocky little bastard keeps inexplicably hitting on him.

He struggles to lay out the words this doesn't have to mean anything or change anything in a way that means he doesn't say it at all but Kakashi will hear it anyway, until he passes out again with his nose pressed against the back of Kakashi's neck.
