    The knight’s face contorts in unimaginable pain; his jaw sets tightly: Owen can hear his teeth grind each other to nubs, all so he does not scream. All as he levels his remaining eye at Owen with beautiful incomprehension, widening to horror as Owen, smiling, traces the curve of his own left orbit, whispers his spell, and coaxes out the gore of his eye.

    Owen has done part of the stealing, an eye for an eye, a gift for a theft. And it is the humans, as ever, who plunder the rest. No man could be a knight and a wizard, and no man ever wanted to be near a wizard. So the knight is knight no more.

    Owen’s past is a mystery even to himself, but he remembers this much: it’s not how the fairytale ended.
