    The first time around, Lan Wangji hadn’t been so subtle.

    He had found the young orphan in Yiling, 159 years to the day he had lost his beloved. Carrying a half-ripped doll and dirt on his pants, the boy had tear streaks across his muddied face yet still gave a fearsome pout when the older cultivator kneeled before him.

    “Wei Ying.” Lan Wangji breathed, reaching for the boy. He flinched, and the Lan elder’s hand stuttered. He closed his eyes, counted to five, then tried again. “Wei Ying. You’re back. You’re–you’re finally back.”

    The boy, his silver eyes wide and concerned, took a stumbling step backwards.

    “Wei-” Lan Wangji started, aghast, as the boy immediately turned tail and ran.

    Of course, like any sensible adult, Lan Wangji chased him.

     

    OR, Lan Wangji outlived his beloved and now finds Wei Ying again in every life. To varying degrees of success.

    He doesn’t dare utter a sound yet, and it’s good that he doesn’t, because soon something happens that stops him in his tracks again. Amidst the desperate, shared heat, Lan Wangji undoes Wei Ying’s belt to slip his hands into his robes. It takes him a while to figure out his way past the outer robes first and then the inner robes, but then his rough palms meet warm skin. Drunk in his delight, Lan Wangji encircles the thin waist with his hands, squeezing possessively.

    There’s hardly any meat to hold. In fact, Lan Wangji can feel Wei Ying’s ribs under his hands, pressing against the skin. His stomach sinks, but then Wei Ying whines needily into his mouth, reminding him of what he intended to do by undressing him. He kisses him once to appease him, and then he moves lower, nuzzling his chest. If he can move the robes aside just enough—

    But then, by instinct, he slides his hands lower, and he meets something unexpected.

    “A-Yuan!” he says, patting his lap. “Come, come.”

    A-Yuan eyes him warily. His little arms remain firmly clamped around Lan Wangji’s leg, and he doesn’t look like he’s planning to let go anytime soon. Lan Wangji can’t help but wonder if he’s overstepped—after all, this child is Wei Ying’s to care for, not his. If he were a Lan, things would be different, because it is expected that all adults at the Cloud Recesses will care for children no matter who they belong to. Do not neglet young ones. But A-Yuan is a Wen.

    “Wei Ying,” he starts, ready to apologize, but then Wei Ying says something that makes his mouth go dry.

    “A-Yuan! It’s time to eat.”
