Eddie narrows his eyes at her suspiciously as she continues to sit there in amicable silence, seemingly conducting some sort of psychological warfare on him.
“Why did you bid on me?” he blurts.
“We never get to hang out one-on-one,” Maddie answers with a shrug. “And you’re very important to a lot of people who are very important to me. So I figured it was about time we did.”
“You spent sixteen hundred dollars,” Eddie reminds her.
Maddie shrugs again. “I was feeling charitable.”
OR: Deciding it's finally time to interfere, Maddie uses the LAFD's Bachelor Auction to win herself some one-on-one time with Eddie.

Without missing a beat, Eddie offers: “I want to handcuff myself to you so that you can never go anywhere without me.”

“Oh,” Eddie yells after him, tone almost mocking. “So that’s it? You’re just going to walk away?”
Buck stops, biting down on his cheek. He knows, distantly, that they’re making a scene. That everyone who isn’t actively putting what’s left of the fire out can see and hear everything they’re saying. He sighs. “I don’t know why you’re so pissed,” he mutters, twisting back around to face him just in time to see Eddie’s eyebrows rise high up on his forehead.
“You don’t know why I’m pissed?” Eddie asks, stepping towards him.
Shit. He needs to walk away before this blows up. They’re one throw away comment from explosion.
Buck whips back around, taking a step towards the engine and away from Eddie. “That’s what I said,” he calls over his shoulder. Which—maybe, isn’t the thing to say to cool things down.
But—
“I’m pissed,” Eddie shouts back, voice frayed and desperate, “Because I fucking love you.”

Buck stills.
Just slightly.
Eddie notices. He always notices.
Buck glances at Eddie — quick, almost reflexive — before looking away.
“It’s just… an important date,” he says casually.
Hen leans forward. “Important how?”
Buck shrugs. “Just is.”
“Oh my God,” Chim gasps dramatically. “Is it a secret anniversary? Are you secretly married? Is it Taylor’s birthday? Wait—”
“It’s not Taylor’s birthday,” Buck says quickly.
There’s the faintest pink creeping up his neck.
Eddie feels something tighten in his chest.
Hen narrows her eyes. “You’re blushing.”
“I am not.”
“You absolutely are.”
Buck points the spatula at them. “You guys are ridiculous. Dinner’s almost done.”
“Deflection!” Chim calls after him.
But Buck’s already retreating to the kitchen, ears red.
