8 months, maybe a little longer. She is counting down the days for him to come home. It isn’t the only countdown she has going, but the first one to expire. So when she hears the lock of their apartment door turn about six and a half months after Jay left while she’s lying on their couch, huddled under a pile of blankets, she thinks she is dreaming. That can’t be, he isn’t supposed to be home for at least another month and a half.

Jay comes home on New Year’s Eve. He wanted to be home for Christmas, but New Year’s Eve was the second-best option, and he was happy he got leave for a week. He wanted to surprise Hailey at home. What he didn’t expect was her own surprise waiting for him when they were just about to seal their reunion with a kiss.
