“May 21st? That’s a year. Almost a year — round this time, in Kalos, I would’ve been wrapping… wrapping up my…” League Conferences are always in the spring. Ash knows this like the back of his hand.
“Wrapping up your what?” Sophocles tilts his head.
When was the Kalos Crisis? When, exactly, was it? The day, the hour, the minute, the second; sometime in the middle of May, death bloomed in the wake of April showers, and Ash knows when. His body does, because it tenses as if preparing for the rapture.
“...Ash?”
“Nothing!” Ash shouts. “Just realized I’m super hot and need to swim so, so bad — I’m just gonna go! Sorry! Bye!”
Sophocles protests, but Ash’s already sunk one foot in the burning sand, tumbling forward into the beach. Brilliant blue waves lap away at children’s ankles, their natural path disrupted — and Ash careens straight into an oncoming wave, only remembering to be excited halfway into the fall.
OR: A year after the Kalos Crisis, Ash finally feels all the emotions he's shoved down.
