Summary
“Please Verso,” his name falls from his sister's, no, Maelle’s lips through desperate gasps. “Please don’t do this. Please don’t make me lose them again. Please.” There’s panic and grief staining every word, every action, every tear running down her face.
He opens his mouth to say the only platitudes he can say, ones he has practiced a thousand times. But she is already gone, petals dissipating into the air, only her tears falling and wetting his hands now.
He reaches out to the tired boy, but the image of Maelle's tear-stained face stops him as what remains of his heart contracts painfully. The man whose memories he had inherited had died for her. He was selfish. Cruel. But he could bear this life for a little while longer for her.

Verso realizes he isn’t the only one Maelle is losing after he ejects her from the Canvas. Maelle learns to reconcile two lives. All problems soften with time.

“I hate you.” Asuka softly confesses. It feels different than her usual declarations full of rage. It's oddly vulnerable. “I hate you so much sometimes that I’m suprised I can feel anything else.”
Shinji’s expression is understanding, but she can see pain rolling in waves in his eyes. “I don't know if I ever will forgive you.” She continues. “I don't know if I even want to.”
He closes his eyes then, but Asuka can see the tears welling in his eyes. She clasps her hands on his. “But if I ever do, I want you to be there.”

He hid the sudden tension he felt in a sip of stew, attempting to swallow down these memories that came bursting forth unbidden: a titian-haired girl who never fussed with pulling its thickness back or up, who spent long and silent hours within inches of her brother's arms, content to be silent right beside him.
Maelle, however, was impatient. Chatty. The kind of teenager a younger Verso once imagined Alicia would grow up to become, like himself and Clea. As Sciel and Lune darted off to do whatever it was they did alone, Maelle took a long and noisy gulp of her stew and turned to Verso. Though her eyes were tired and full of grief, she was beaming.
"The snow's beautiful tonight," she said.
"It is."
Maelle tries to share a peaceful moment with Verso. Verso tries to define the lines between Maelle and Alicia.
