Three months of switching shifts and dodging glances and doing anything not to get into everything that had gone wrong. Three months of lying to yourselves. It was all going fine until Robby had to call you just as you got home from your overnight shift; the person sitting in front of him as a patient in the ED warranting the break in silence. You both should have known you wouldn't be able to leave well enough alone after the fact.

He was sure that when he finally tried to close his eyes and go to sleep, he would start to overthink all the ways that this could go wrong, all the ways it already has gone wrong that neither of them cared about enough in the moment. Those thoughts would come. Eventually. But for now he just focused on the soft sounds of sleep coming from the other side of his bed that had been empty for far too long before this.

Neither he nor James seem all that thrilled about their current situation, but things begin to change between them soon enough. Steve starts to think that perhaps James is the first person to really see him for who he is, and he's not sure what he's supposed to do with that.

Getting into politics wasn't the original plan, because there really hadn't been an original plan. But it was too late to back out now, even if the entire campaign process was making Bucky rethink trying to become a Congressman altogether.
They said that you were supposed to be making his life easier, or at least the politics part of it easier. He wasn't so sure about that either.
