“Are you okay?” Grian asked, lowering his voice.
“Oh yeah, I’m good,” Scar replied with an easy laugh. “Just got a bit lost in thought, and by the time the bell rang, I would have crushed a dozen toes if I tried to get to you guys.”
“Fair enough, fair enough,” Grian laughed with him.
Scar’s laughter made the sun-kissed dimples on his cheeks deepen and made his sharp face soften. No wonder the kids took to him so fast. The first day of the season flashed before Grian’s eyes of Scar greeting every camper as if they were the world, and his own heart clenched when that same smile was turned on him.
No, that’s not for you, Grian chided himself. It can’t be. You can’t hurt him too.
