There must be a worm that’s wrapped itself around his thoughts — that’s constrained his neural pathways to just the thought of Buck’s in love with you — because something takes over Eddie’s mouth. “So, let’s talk about this like we’re dealing with a problem together. As partners. Maddie told you something that we talked about in confidence and now you seem to be…” Buck looks over Eddie assessingly. “Upset? Mad? Let’s work together to get to the root of the problem. Y’know. Like a team.”
Eddie gapes at Buck, gobsmacked by the sheer force of adoration that sweeps over him. It’s so Buck — to want to work through something in partnership — and so completely and utterly ridiculous.
Eddie’s never felt more achingly fond and deeply besotted before in his life.
“I love you,” Eddie says, because suddenly it’s too easy to remember why Buck’s the person he can talk to about anything. “Maddie told me you didn’t want to be pining over your straight best friend, and it made me realise I want you to love me, Buck.”
Buck takes a sharp inhale, the hands on his knees clutching at the fabric of his shorts so tightly his knuckles are white. “Oh,” he says. “I-I wasn’t expecting that.”
“Do you think we could work through that as a team?” Eddie asks. His breath feels trapped in his lungs. “My feelings for you? Even if they’re — especially since they’re not reciprocated?”
