That what? That their relationship would stagnate with the secret lingering between them? That Arthur would some day find out on his own, and it would go the way it always had in the past? Or that Charles would never be able to open up to Arthur, nor anyone else, and would instead continue to live only ever being half-known by those that mattered most to him. Perhaps he had been worried all along, before ever even meeting Arthur, that he’d never again have anyone know him completely and still care, still love him just as he was.
He shook his head, clearing the thoughts away. Even with Arthur’s acceptance, those pains were too large and burdensome to share now. Instead, he finished, “—I wanted to tell you. Reckon you’re the best friend I’ve ever had and I wanted you to know.”

This is an alternate ending where Javier follows Arthur and John instead of Dutch at Beaver Hollow.
It's intended to be read as a part two/alt ending to my other Jovier fic that's in this series, but can be read alone with the caveat that the relationship between John and Javier is many years established by now. And also very emotionally constipated and full of so many misunderstandings it's probably a world record. It's written in the same format with multiple POVs.

In the wake of Jack's rescue from Angelo Bronte and return to Shady Belle, Arthur finds himself unable to celebrate with the rest of the gang. Seeing John come so close to losing his son has inevitably brought up the guilt and grief of his own lost son. He steps away to deal with it alone, but runs into Charles on patrol. It isn't long before the awful truth of it comes spilling out of him.

Along the way he picked up a young John Marston, who thus never runs with Dutch. Despite leaving, Arthur never truly left his connections behind him, and when Dutch asked for help, he always answered. In 1899, during the event of the game, this arrangement might eventually force Arthur to choose to whom he truly owes his loyalty.
John sneered. "You think I'd protect Dutch Van der Linde? Believe me, if I knew where he was, I'd tell you. Hell, I'd go get him myself. He's worth 10 large right now."
Milton sneered right back. "I am not a fool, Mister Marston, kindly do not treat me as one. You would do nothing without Arthur Morgan's say-so, and that will be what puts you on the gallows right beside him."

Arthur sighs. “Okay,” he says, ready to confront the inevitable. “Well, do you need me to… prod anyone for you?”
“Ah! Not right now, Herr Morgan, not right now,” Strauss says. Arthur looks at him, confused. “As I said, swimmingly! I gave Herr Smith a list of debtors a few days back and he’s managed to get the money from all of them. Efficient work, that man does, though that leaves none for you, I’m afraid.”
