Summary
After an eternity of hiding in the shadows, the Mind Flayer had finally caught him. It had caught him and killed him and now Will was dead. The only question he had was where he had ended up.
“Is this heaven?” he asked. “Or is this hell?”
The man brought the cigarette back up to his lips and took a long drag. His features were etched with confusion.
“This is Hawkins.”
Will was never found in the Upside Down despite Joyce and Hopper’s best efforts. After finding his vest, they assumed that the monsters had gotten to Will before they could. Will’s family and friends had no choice but to move on without him. After three years everyone has settled into a new type of normal. El has a family now and the party is doing their best to go forward. What they don’t know is that Will survived. He’s back from the Upside Down with little to no recollection of his old life in Hawkins. It's up to them to find him and bring him home again.

Will needs a date to his mom's wedding. Mike volunteers.
“I have an idea,” says Mike.
Ice cubes form in Will’s stomach. “How dangerous is it? Like, should I call Dustin to talk you down, or should I call Nancy to be ready to drive us to the hospital?”
“No,” says Mike, “you can’t tell anyone or it won’t work.”
“Or what won’t work?” Will asks. It’s like picking up a rock you know a spider will be under.
Mike gets up and closes Will’s door. Hopper doesn’t make them keep it open but sometimes Will does anyway, because every now and then lying around alone with Mike on his bed just makes his chest ache too much. If the door is open he can tell himself You can’t do anything right now, someone will see.
Mike leans back against the door. His eyes are lit up with that special maniacal gleam that the Wheelers get right before they do something insane, like when Nancy says, “Then we have to go kill Vecna ourselves,” or whatever. “Take me to the wedding,” says Mike.
“Yeah,” says Will slowly, “you’ll be at the wedding. Obviously.”

Will laughs a little, shaking his head with an expression of complete bewilderment. “You already have.”
“Something else.”
Will shrugs. Mike wonders what he’s thinking. “Go for it.”
“It might be weird,” Mike warns in a stage whisper. He isn’t sure what’s weird or not anymore. He has a feeling this question crosses the line, but the feeling isn’t strong enough to stop him from asking. Not with Will standing so close, looking so glowy and perfect.
“Whatever, Mike,” Will laughs. “It can’t be weirder than what’s already happened to-”

But Mike had let them.

His fluffy hair at the front, clumped pieces at the back where he’d slid his fingers in a mere few minutes before. His pretty green eyes that look hazel or even brown in this light, the dark circles he gets when he drinks framing them like intricate paintings. A satisfied, bloody smile.
Mike isn’t satisfied. He swallows thickly, choking down the words 'don’t you want more?'

"Is Will your boyfriend?" Holly asks, and Mike immediately chokes on the lettuce in his mouth.
"Wh- what?" he gasps, dropping his fork and swallowing back the salad that suddenly feels like cement in his throat. Holly's looking at him with a strange expression, like she's trying to figure something out.
"Will. Is he your boyfriend?" she repeats, even though Mike very obviously heard her, and the question doesn't feel any less shocking the second time.
"No!" He yelps. "No, why would you think that?"
Holly shrugs, taking another bite of spaghetti like this is a normal conversation and she is not slowly killing him. "Nancy calls him your little boyfriend sometimes, and Mom says he's your person, which basically means the same thing, and you live together and act like a couple and unpack groceries together, and- I don't know. Seems like it could be a thing."
