Summary
Arlo's always had a soft spot for his cousin, John. He admires how, despite repeated tragedies including the death of his parents and losing the ability to both speak and walk to a degenerative illness, John never gives up on being a good person and an even better friend. Aunt Val is such a saint for taking him in.
Other people, however, sense that something is off. Seraphina, after meeting him once, is convinced that John is a high-tier. NXGen employees feel uneasy about the way their boss treats their youngest test subject. And John? Well, he finds himself flip-flopping between accepting that he's doomed to die alone in a cage and thinking up wild plans of escape and revenge.
Everyone knows they can't take on the Authorities. But maybe, if enough people can find their voices, they can save a life. -

His brand-new allies try to rescue him as soon as they can, but Ozai has a plan to destroy his son before they get the chance: let the nobility do anything they want, as long as he doesn't die. His only comfort is a possibly-evil-possibly-just-delusional woman who claims she's his mother- but Ursa's been absent for years.

It grimaces through that pinned-on smile. Its eyes are flat and dead.
“That remains to be seen,” it mutters. It shrugs its shoulders, squirms a little bit. Trying to get comfortable in skin that it doesn’t belong in.
“It’s a story about some kid who freed all the monsters,” it says. “They’re…they’re a…good…they’re…”

It's more of a piece of folded paper, really. It screams amateur - a default font and clip-art. Inkjet rather than laser, so the ink has bled slightly in the damp. The crease isn’t even, so the halves don’t quite match. It’s charming.
