Summary
They find him in the boathouse. There’s glass at his throat and a fear thick enough to choke, but Steve doesn’t take it personally. These things happen.
Eddie’s shaking apart and Steve doesn’t know him but he knows the look in his eye.
They leave him with promises and a hope that he’s not crazy. Still, they leave him.
There’s a story Steve remembers about looking back, a punishment in salt. He’s got his key in the ignition and there’s something brackish in his mouth when he turns to see the shadow in the window.
“We can’t…he’s alone,” he says and no one answers because they know he’s right but they don’t know what comes next.
It’s Dustin who finally breaks the silence, a quiet, “where can he go where no one would look?”
Eddie hides at Steve's house. There are consequences.

Summary
Steve jerks awake, sitting up so quickly that Robin almost topples over and staring wildly around the room. When his gaze lands on Eddie, he blanches visibly.
“Oh, shit,” he mutters. “Come on, no. Come on. Not again.”
“Harrington?” Eddie asks slowly. He does not love the way that Steve is staring at him right now. He really doesn’t. Steve looks like he’s staring at a ghost, a bloodied monster, like Eddie is something that should not exist in the light of day. “You good, dude?”

Summary
That night, 1984
Steve sits at the kitchen table, a pack of frozen carrots wrapped in a tea towel against his swollen purple face. "I'm fine," he says. It’s over. They fought the monsters, and they won. Now he can rest.
Except in real life, the credits don't roll, and they don't get to skip ahead to Christmas.

Summary
June 1986
Steve is lonely. He’s always been lonely, honestly. An empty house, absent parents, friends that didn’t really know him. Frankly, he probably doesn’t really know himself, either. It used to be easier to ignore—between sports and parties and searching for the next girl to hang around with.
Then Nancy Wheeler told him he was bullshit. In the wreckage of the storm, he realized she probably hadn’t been that off base to call his life bullshit.
[Life in Hawkins, Indiana is boring, ordinary, no supernatural entities. Steve still changes.
Luckily, he still makes some new friends, too. Certain people are simply meant to be in the same story.]

Summary
Oh, good. It’s not Dustin at the door. Max…Max, he can handle. She’s confrontational and perceptive to a fault, but she usually doesn’t bring the entirety of Hawkins at the slightest concern. Plus, she knows how to keep things to herself.
He tries not to drag himself downstairs at the speed of molasses, and just as he’s about to start spouting excuses, he finally looks at Max face-to-face.
Bruises. There are bruises.
--
After Billy’s death in Season 3, Max’s home life falls apart. She finds she’s not the only one and joins Steve in his place at Forest Hills. Steve has no idea how to raise a teenager, but by god does he try. Max has no idea how to tell him to focus on himself, too.
