Mike blinked.
For a second, he looked like he didn’t know how to answer without lying.
Then he exhaled and said, quietly, “I do.”
Max’s chest tightened painfully.
Mike’s voice went flatter, like he was trying to put distance between himself and the truth. “Just… not in front of everyone.”A blizzard knocks out the power in Hawkins and traps Max Mayfield somewhere she never expects to feel safe: the Wheelers’ living room, lit by candles and too much normal.
Or: Max gets snowed in, gets seen, and falls asleep holding Mike Wheeler's hand.

Max coasted to a stop right in front of him, board angled like a challenge.
“Listen,” she said, practical like she was offering a deal, “I’m not trying to replace anybody. But you’re looking for some gross little lizard thing, right?”Mike hesitated, jaw tight.
Max tapped her skateboard with her toe. “I can be the zoomer.”
Mike frowned. “The what?”
“The zoomer,” she repeated, like he was slow. “The one who, you know, goes fast. Scouts. Looks around. Finds stuff before it finds you.”
Mike Wheeler is still calling Eleven every night and getting nothing back—just static, the same way Hawkins keeps pretending last year never happened. Max Mayfield is new, sharp, and completely unimpressed by the Party’s rules. They slowly learn to tolerate each other.

The thing is, El has never understood the concept of personal space. Since she came back in 1984, ever since she integrated in their lives so smoothly and so warmly, Mike has had to get used to the fact that El treats distance with him as a personal insult.
To lose her then was to lose a beautiful, wonderful, magical, tragic mystery from a little week of his childhood; to lose her now would be to lose his own heart.
