You’re seven when you meet him, and he’s six.

He insists that he’s six and a half, thank you, as he pulls himself to sit on the wall beside you. He’s small, smaller than you and Stuart and definitely smaller than Peter. His socks are still clean and white, the cuffs of his jumper crisp and new, and he kicks his feet.

He says he’s called David, and he smiles at you in that little way of his.

You tell him you’re Don, and sitting next to him, with your skinned knees and scuffed shoes, you smile and he laughs with you.

I know it's not Christmas anymore, but I didn't manage to get this finished in time so HERE IT IS in January! This is just super fluffy romantic/family Christmas fun, in which David spends Christmas with the Scripps', and Don finally comes out to his parents. Very minor content warnings for mentions of depression, suicide attempt and medication (all only mentioned very briefly in one paragraph), as well as a reference to HIV/AIDS, a couple of sex references, and some slight parental confusion about the concept of bisexuality. Enjoy!

When he gets in to said living room (and dining room and kitchen), Don can hear what he thinks is a duet of David and Cyndi Lauper from the bedroom. He smiles to himself, wiping rain-wet shoes on the mat and shaking out his umbrella. He could get used to this, not coming home to an empty flat.

“Said he had a couple of books you were after, is all,” Lockwood clicks his tongue, finishes his cake and flicks the wrapper at Scripps’s chest. “Anyway, I’d best be off. I’ve half a float of milk left to unload on some poor bastards. See you Monday, lads.”

He gives a half-hearted wave as he sees himself out, and Scripps finds himself inundated by particularly exhausted office staff for the next half hour, so doesn’t have chance to think any more on it.
