“I have a lot of issues, but atrocious dating etiquette and sleeping with my not-psychiatrist aren’t included.” He shakes his head, shoves his glasses back on, and takes a step back. “Do you…what? Think I fucked him so he'd rubber-stamp me? That's,” he makes a face, “crass.”

“What?” says Cell. He laughs, a creaky, lopsided sound. “‘Ground rules’? What are— What are you talking about? What the fuck is wrong with you? You’re being…weird today.”
“What I’m trying to be is realistic,” Felps replies. “This isn’t Alcatraz, Cell. It’s my fucking apartment. I can’t seem to get rid of you, and you clearly want to be here because you keep breaking in, and if either of us do anything to attack or expose the other, everything goes to shit.”
He throws out a hand. “So here we are. We’re stuck together. Might as well try to make this tolerable.”
Cell stares. For all the deals, threats, and blackmailing he did in Alcatraz, it seems Cell never once considered the idea of a mutually-beneficial compromise, because this is the closest Felps has seen the man to genuinely perplexed.
Cell opens his mouth: “Felps I have no idea what you’re on about.”
Okay, that’s fucking funny.
“What I mean,” Felps elaborates, trying to keep his tone even and reasonable, “is that if you’re going to be here, you need to make some concessions. Like taking your boots off.”

“It’s in better shape than I thought it would be,” Cellbit said, coming to stand next to her. Roier was having a very loud and animated discussion with Missa.
“I know,” Bagi said. She leaned over just far enough for their shoulders to bump together.
“What’s the objective?”
“Just to find out more,” Bagi said, “that’s why I wanted to come alone. I want to know what happened to those children, but it’s been a couple decades. Most of the clues will have been destroyed. And there’s a good chance this Bad person is dead too.”
Cellbit nodded. He crossed his arms over his chest. Bagi fiddled with her necklace and the ring that hung from it as she waited for her little brother to say something.
He was content to be quiet, though. Bagi closed her eyes. Under Missa and Roier’s loud voices, and Philza’s occasional dry comment, she could hear birds singing in the trees. She could hear the wind blowing through the trees and through the plants that surrounding them. Somewhere, a dog or wolf or something barked. In front of them, the mansion made no sound.
