Collapsing to the cold stone floor of Kiamo Ko, she’d barely registered Chistery and the other monkeys wrapping a cloak around her before her eyes slid shut."

“Good morning,” Aliya said brightly, pausing her work to greet him. Her mother had strictly instilled manners into her, especially towards customers of their family apothecary. “How can I help you?”
“Morning,” the man replied, low and quiet, as if to preserve the stillness of the morning air. He took another step closer, and the light from the rising sun caught his face.
Aliya froze.
Scars. So so many scars. A thick, pale, ropey line split through his left cheek, from jaw to nose, deep enough that it tugged the skin when he spoke. Another slashed down the right side of his face, dangerously close to his eye. The burns were the worst: glossy, stretched patches from temple to neck, each one warped and puckered like melted candlewax.
