The decorated bugs had caught Hornet by surprise. The cage they’d thrown her in had some kind of seal, so she had little hope of escaping. At some point after she fell asleep, they had thrown in another bug, a dragonfly. They were a shade of blue Hornet had scarcely seen before, and their wings sparkled like stars in the dim light. She’d have introduced herself, but some part of whatever binding was on the cage prevented her from talking.

Cynikka turns to her with a pout. “But Cass!” she whines. “He keeps threatening my volcano!”
But Cass remains firm. “Yeah,” she says before pointing over her shoulder with her thumb. “And your brother looks like he needs to go to the hospital.”
Behind her, both Saparata and Fluixon stop pulling at each other’s hair and sit up. Their clothes are all rumpled up and, somehow, faint bruises have begun to bloom over their exposed skin.
Saparata frowns up at them. “He deserves it.”
Fluixon splutters. “What the fuck?!”
Saparata smacks his hands on Fluixon’s face, aggressively squishing his cheeks. “You framed me for multiple assassinations!”
“It’s just a boardgame!”
