Verona and Franco were so excited to visit their friends Luca and Giulia in their summer home in Portorosso. From sea-folk to sun-rays, their interests were piqued, but especially towards one thing in particular: Alberto Scorfano, Giulia’s adopted brother and Luca’s fierce (though not yet requited) affinity. However, as the five’s time together progressed, Verona’s focus narrowed onto two, irrefutable facts: Alberto Scorfano is not the charmer he makes himself out to be, and Luca—though he’s too blind by love to notice—needs out. Thankfully, she (with assistance from Franco) is more than ready to take up the task. -

Their conversation was naturally reaching a close and as Luca stifled a yawn and stood to stretch his limbs and pick up his coat, Alberto was suddenly struck with a wild, panicked urge that he wanted to see Luca again; needed to see him again.
“Do you want to come see my art studio tomorrow?” Alberto blurted out, causing Luca to fumble as he buttoned his coat. “If you don’t have plans already, I mean.”
“All my plans are books,” Luca admitted with a self-deprecating grimace.
“You’re such a nerd,” Alberto laughed, standing to pick up Luca’s umbrella by the door. He flipped it around to grasp the top end, holding it out so Luca could take it by the curved handle. “So that’s a yes, then?”
Luca curled his fingers around the handle to take the umbrella from him with a slow smile, his eyes fixed on Alberto’s.
“That’s a yes.”

Lio sets the dice down, folds his hands on top of his desk. “Galo,” he says with exaggerated patience, “you’re… how old are you again?”
“Twenty-two!”
“Okay. You’re a twenty-two-year-old manchild with more enthusiasm than is good for you and one brain cell to handle it with. I’m a former eldritch being of unimaginable power and considerably more years than you.”
Galo waggles his eyebrows. “I dig experienced,” he says.
Lio’s pale brows levitate into his hairline. “Are you seriously hitting on me right now?” he asks in disbelief. “Or are you just trying to get a rise out of me? And either way, do you really think that’s a good idea?”
Galo slams his hand on Lio’s desk. “I think it’s the best goddamn idea I’ve ever had!” he says.

This is a mock-scientific paper (written in the year 1999) detailing the history and physiology of the race of 'Sea Monsters' present in the Pixar movie Luca. This work is written as though it was from a human researcher that is collaborating with several Sea Monster communities (information, healthy participants, and cadavers) to introduce the specifics of their biology to the scientific community. (Almost) All features are assumed to be and explained exactly as they are shown in the movie, making this work cannon-compliant. If you wish to know how any physiological traits that Luca and Alberto (and co.) demonstrate in the movie would work in the real world, then this is for you!
Warning: This is a very sciencey text - which means it is dry with a lot of jargon while discussing biology & physiology. Again, this is a mock-scientific paper, NOT a story!

So. Here are the facts as you see them.
Fact number one: Giulia is going to be on the train for Genova in two days. She's going back home--because Genova is her home, apparently, and you're still grappling with the idea that there are places outside your island and Portorosso, BIG ones, they keep telling you, all over the globe--where she'll spend the next nine or so months going to school.
Fact number two: You and Luca now own your very own Vespa. It's not road-ready yet, and it might not be for a while, which is fine actually because it turns out now that the Paguros aren't going to send Luca away to the bottom of the ocean, you're going to have to whittle them down into giving him permission to run away with you.
Fact number three: That's not even really a plan that makes sense, if you think about it for more than a few minutes at a time.
Fact number four: You haven't forgotten that Luca doesn't actually want to run away with you anymore. He's just pretending he never said it.

“Giulia. Coffee?” Luca asks from his seat at the kitchen table, in what he hopes is a pathetic enough tone that she’ll make it for him. Giulia gives him a sympathetic look over her shoulder, her hair already tied up in a messy bun. A curl bounces at her temple as she shakes her head.
“Sorry, Luca. All out.”
“Giulia…”
“It's fine, I have a better idea. You know where the science building is?” Luca nods as Giulia is already scribbling the directions on an old pizzeria-flyer, “There’s a little campus cafe just on the far side of the grass, you know where people sometimes study? My brother works there, just tell him I sent you and he’ll sort you out with something. You'll be caffeinated in no time.”
(Luca needs coffee and Alberto has coffee. Seems like a simple enough equation for something that ends up being anything but.)
