Summary
On their way back to Jackson after the massacre at the hospital, Joel and Ellie stop for a brief bathroom break in the woods and find something completely unexpected hidden amongst the trees, the very last little. Compelled by his caregiver nature, Joel brings the girl back to Jackson in the hope that Maria and Tommy will know what to do with her. Weeks later, as he tries to assimilate to life in Jackson whilst simultaneously adapting to his newly cemented role as Ellie's guardian, he suddenly finds himself taking on another responsibility. With his self-image at an all time low and the prying eyes of the council peering down his neck, can Joel help this shy, trembling woman to finally make herself at home, or is he destined to let both of his girls down?

She’s Jackson’s oddball engineer: brilliant, eccentric, better with patterns than people.
She doesn’t do unpredictable.
Joel Miller is unpredictable. Dangerous. Gravitational.
What starts as reluctant proximity turns fraught, obsessive—and just controlled enough to keep breathing.
But old ghosts are clawing their way back. And one of them knows exactly who she used to be.Bookmarked by CaffeineMyFavoriteDrug

Joel Miller x Immune Reader
Before the 2003 outbreak, the Cordyceps virus was a secret government project led by your father, a dedicated scientist. After realizing his mistake, he discovered your immunity following a bite at age 10. Desperate to make amends, he made deals with Fedra and later with the Fireflies, while you chose to escape instead of sacrificing yourself.
Years of evading capture ended when you were eventually caught and taken to a hospital in Salt Lake with another immune girl. They thought two hosts would boost their vaccine chances, unaware that Joel was ready to take them all down.
Unbeknownst to him, he had saved both you and Ellie. Now, you set out on your own, hoping to find your rescuer again, leaving the rest of the Fireflies behind in your hospital scrubs.
It wasn't long before you unexpectedly encountered him in Jackson, but he had no idea who you were or about your immunity.Bookmarked by CaffeineMyFavoriteDrug

Summary
The world ended, but people didn’t. Not entirely.
Twenty years after the outbreak, survival has become second nature. But when Althea agrees to help smuggle a girl across the country, everything shifts. There’s Joel: quiet, brutal, impossible. The gruff, closed-off man with blood on his hands and grief in his bones. There’s Ellie: foul-mouthed and sharp-eyed, with too much riding on her small shoulders. And there’s Althea, stuck somewhere between running from her past and crashing headfirst into a future she never dared to want.
Love isn’t safe. Hope isn’t smart. But some things are worth the risk.
Because in the end, it’s not about what you’ve lost,
but what you’re willing to fight for,
even when the world seems beyond saving.- Language:

Joel doesn't like you very much because you challenge him. Or at least that's what you think.
