Politely excusing himself, Alex glides across the floor, deftly avoiding any entanglements that could delay him. Sliding up next to Henry, he places his hand on the small of Henry’s back, and can feel the tension there, confirming that they don’t like this person. “Hi, I’m Alex. And you are?” reaching out his other arm to shake the stranger’s hand. Shake hands, smile pretty, make everyone watching believe they are making inane small talk.

Henry looks into the crib and thinks everything was worth her. He tries not to think about the beginning, the shame. It’s better not to try and remember, although there isn’t much memory there, anyway. She’s here and that’s all that matters. She’s here and there is nothing anyone can do about it now. Vodka has never been his friend, but he can't bring himself to regret the result.

The next exchange comes through loud and clear and shuts Alex down completely.
“And what about her father? Is he in the picture?” the worker asks, “We’ll need to notify him.”
“No,” is the answer, “It’s embarrassing, but I never got a name. It was just a drunken, one night stand with a cowboy.”
Alex freezes, he can literally feel his blood run cold, and he remembers where he knows that scent. It was easily the drunkest night of his life. His biggest regret was losing the handsome stranger.They both mess up, but they've been looking for each other ever since. How could they not?

“If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were trying to sully my honor there, cowboy…” Henry reaches one hand up, letting his middle finger trace his cheekbone. “…Steal my virtue, even.” His tone is as teasing and as flirtatious as he thinks he can manage.
He’s taking a page out of his romance novel, his confidence coming back to him in an unpredictable wave. That’s how it seems to operate, ebbing and flowing against Henry’s will. He tries to ride it as it crashes to shore.
Alex smiles, eyes shimmering with playfulness. “Promise I’m a gentleman, darlin’.” His calloused hands creep underneath Henry’s shirt, fingertips pressing into perfectly soft skin. He’s closer now, lips inches from Henry’s ear, “Unless you’d rather I wasn’t.”
Henry Mountchristen is left alone for the first time in his life.

“Fuck off, sweetheart,” he laughs, a soundbite of the sun. Henry forces himself not to physically react, the term of endearment sweet and menacingly familiar coming from Alex’s lips. It’s been years. “You know they’re useful.”
“Ah yes, eyelashes, truly a formidable instrument in managing international relations.”
Alex grins, and Henry is too late to catch the slightest downward lilt on the corner of his mouth, “Worked on you once, didn’t it?”
Oh, did that ache.
(Much had happened since the time Henry had told Alex to leave. Alex had passed the bar, gotten married, had the most beautiful daughter. And Henry, well. He stayed right where he was.)
