The night air is freezing cold with Ishval always turning to ice after the sun sets. It's the kind of dry, ruthless cold that sinks into your bones no matter how many layers you're wearing. At first, Roy welcomed it, thankful for the contrast to the blistering heat of the day. Over time, however, it stopped being a pleasant novelty and morphed into something he's come to hate. Amestris, with its pleasantly warm weather and occasional rain, feels like a lifetime ago. He can't remember the last time he was warm in any sense of the word, always caught between blistering hot and freezing cold.
Except when he's next to Maes like this.
Maes always runs hot. His body radiates heat even in the dead of an Ishvalan night, as if the Amestrian sun has clung to his skin even though it feels like it's been so long since they've left. Roy's head rests lightly on Maes' shoulder, and the contact makes his heart ache. Not from pain, but from longing, because Maes is the closest thing he has left to something human in an endless battlefield of cold Amestrian monsters and Ishvalan corpses.

His hands were gentle as he cradled the mockingjay, and shivering between his delicate fingers it was even prettier than her golden pin.
He didn’t sing, she remembers as they pull them all into the Justice Building, but he hummed for that little bird. Just a few notes of the Valley Song, where the words would be, Birds in the heavens know I love you, Know I love you, Oh...
