Summary
In the half-year since their return, Francis had become aloof, impassive, withdrawn. There was no logic to this strange metamorphosis. At Greenhithe, Francis had promised to look after him. Had told James: Come find me. Yet Francis had never been further out of reach.
On a cold spring day in 1849, Francis drops everything and flees London for his sister's farm in Ireland. James, hurt and hungry for answers, gives chase.

Summary
Greg peeks over his shoulder, seeing everyone he came with wholly distracted by something at the ice bucket. He bobs his head with the music, trying to force himself to get into it while he scans the crowd and picks out a few people – a group in flashy red sequins, bright against the lights, a dancer in a gold shift that doesn’t hide anything, a familiar, whacky character in furs who must be sort of inhuman, and…
And Tom?
No.
…Yeah?

Summary
Greg smokes and tries to think of what to do, like, with his life in general.
There’s not really anyone he can strategize about this with. He digs out a notebook and scratches out a list, instead, because that’s something he can rely on. He does his best thinking high, anyway.

Summary
As a teenager, Kendall sometimes found himself wishing his father would hit him.
In a lot of ways, it would make things simpler. It would be clear-cut. Something solid that he could lean on, something he could point to and say: You see that? That was not okay. He hit me, and it was wrong, because – and I really can’t make this any simpler for you – it’s wrong for a parent to hit their child, under any circumstances, no matter how annoying the child is being or how tolerant the parent has been up until this point. We can all agree on that, right? Right?

Kendall has always had an unusual relationship with pain.
