Or: During his investigations into The Boneturner's Tale, Mike tracked down Angela to try to learn more about how the paranormal world operates. Slightly over a year later, he finds a book by Robert Smirke, hyperfocuses too close to the sun, experiences the consequences of his inactions, and realizes that he can't fix this on his own.
He doesn't want to call Angela. He barely knows her. But she said he could call her anytime he wanted, and... there's no one else to call.
Fortunately (and perhaps surprisingly), Angela is remarkably well equipped to handle this situation.
