“So, Aqu-tan, what kind of women do you like?”Apparently, Mem-Cho had never before heard of subtlety.
Aqua didn’t seem bothered, though, as his reply was as deadpan and neutral as possible: “A woman with a pretty face.”
“You’re the embodiment of shallowness.” “You’re the worst.” Mem-cho and Yuki’s replies somehow carried even less emotion. Akane found herself agreeing with them. It didn’t disway Aqua from continuing in the slightest, though.
“She has a smile like the sun, and when she’s out there, she does what she wants flawlessly. When you look at her, she just screams ‘I’m invincible’.”
This time, Mem-Cho sounded incredibly teasing.
“Hey, hey, Aqua, that sounds a bit like your mother, don’t you think.” Yuki murmured out something in agreement, talking about an ‘Oedipus complex’ and how that was totally gross.
“Kinda, yeah.” He immediately stunned them into silence. “My mom…She’s the best. She does everything you could ask a mother to do, she is everything you would want a mother to be. That’s why I want to marry someone like her, so my kids can have the same joy as I did growing up.”
“Wow, Aqua, thank you!”
“Mom?!”
Turning around his chair, Aqua had finally noticed his mother standing in the doorway. Akane and the other girls suppressed giggles at the sight of the usually stoic and emotionless Hoshino Aqua being caught off guard so easily. “I came here because I was curious what kind of person my future daughter-in-law would be, but this really is a surprise!”
“I- You-” Aqua’s face was scarlet all the way down, his blush creeping to his neck.
Trying to regain what composure he had left, he got up. “...I’m leaving.” Hearing no protest, he turned around and stiffly walked out the door, but not before giving a final warning and glare at his colleagues. “You saw nothing.”

The first time he realizes he lacks autonomy he doesn’t know what the word means. Timothy Drake is six years old, and his mother dresses him up in a too tight suit. Her nails drag through his hair, forcing it into something presentable. And he spends the next four hours smiling and charming the elite at a Gala.
It is not a particularly harsh punishment, not an utter violation of who he is, but that doesn’t matter. Because Tim will look back on that night four, six, ten years later and all he will remember is having a near panic attack in the car because the suit hurt, because it was too tight and rough, and people were touching his hair and pinching his cheeks and he hated it, and they wouldn’t stop and -
