“It’s too late in the year for apples,” Max said, his voice softer now.
“But they like them,” Lando insisted, his words tight with stubbornness and a trace of guilt.
“But no one has them,” Max said, trying to keep the edge out of his voice. He glanced down at Lando’s leg as the younger stumbled to keep up. “How’s your leg?”
“Leave it, Max. I’m fine,” Lando muttered, not meeting his eyes.
Max didn’t push any further. He just nodded, though he watched Lando out of the corner of his eye, saw the way he favoured his left side, how every step seemed to pain him. Market days always took it out of him, the jostling crowds, the long walks, but Lando would never admit it.
Max raised his voice over the noise of the market as the rest of there group came into view. “I found him he was looking for apples!”
“It’s not the right season for apples,” George called back from where he was securing some logs to the back of his horse.

With a choked sob, Oscar sank to the floor, his hands clutching at his chest. Logan closed the door and knelt beside him, his heart aching with the helplessness of their shared struggle.
"Osc, it's okay," Logan murmured, his voice a gentle plea. "You don't have to fight this alone. Let yourself regress, just for a moment. I'm here."
But Oscar shook his head, his eyes wide with fear and desperation. "I can't, Logan," he whispered, his voice raw with emotion. "I can't let go. Not here, not now."
"Oscar, please... you need to... you can't fight it..." Logan pleaded, his voice trembling with emotion as he reached out to his friend.
