By the end of first year, exhaustion stopped feeling temporary and started feeling like background noise, and while teachers talked about growth and potential and future rankings, all he cared about was getting through the next day without anyone else ending up in a hospital bed or worse.
Desire, attraction, curiosity, all of it stayed locked away, because survival and responsibility left no space for anything else, and if he never let himself think about who he might want or who might want him back, then he never had to deal with how fragile that kind of hope could be in a world where people disappeared overnight.
So he focused on training and classwork and combat drills and strategy sessions and patrol simulations, because if he stayed busy enough and strong enough and angry enough, then maybe he could outrun everything else that tried to live under his skin.
And for most of that year, it worked.
But then, Kirishima happened.

Kirishima gasped in several breaths, rolling over to splay out on the cushioned sparring mat. His hardening faded away as he propped himself up on his elbows. "Damn," He panted, looking over at Katsuki as a grin split his face. "You win this round. Are you feeling any better now?” He asked as he climbed to his feet and rolled a shoulder to loosen it.
“I- I don’t fucking know.” Katsuki admitted, scrubbing a hand against his trousers to dry it before wiping his face. He felt weird. Really fucking weird.
