    And then Vi is there, kneeling among the debris, cradling Caitlyn’s weight against her thighs. Cait’s breathing is ragged, yet it’s the only thing keeping Vi alive, breath by shallow breath.

    Vi’s tongue feels like cotton in her mouth, but she tries anyway. Even if no sound comes out.

    “Cait!” It’s hoarse, a ghost of a weeping plea. Her throat burns.

    And yet, Caitlyn’s uninjured eyelid twitches at the sound. It opens slowly, as if Vi had summoned her back from wherever the pain and exhaustion had taken her.

    As if that single note in her voice was enough to pull her from the darkness.

    Perhaps it was.

    In the aftermath of battle, Vi finds Caitlyn.
    And as long as Caitlyn is still here, Vi will be too.
