So far, sauron needed the ring to take over middle earth. He needed it, and everyone he had sent to get it failed miserably, to the point that a hobbit of all things managed to sneak past him and destroy it, well, almost.
So the ring took it in their own hands to get it to him, at some point, he didn’t IMMEDIATELY need it, right? They could have some fun. No harm with that.
