The corner of Yoruichi’s mouth lifted just a fraction, her eyes lazily lowered to not quite half-mast. “Central has decided that too many empowered living beings is a threat to the security of Soul Society as a whole. In exchange for a full pardon and the possibility of returning to work with the Gotei in future for yourself and Tessai, you have been ordered to change that situation. ‘Empowered’, if you like, though ‘living’ would be far easier.”
He remained silent and completely still.
She ignored that and ran a testing nail lightly over the edge of a small kunai. “I believe in you, Kisuke. Given your talents you can be back at the mansion by nightfall.”
He moved.
Her breath came in a little gasp, fingers scrabbling over the now-wet blade pinning her to the chair she’d commandeered.
“Believe in me a little less.”

I knew it when it was impossible for it to be in front of me. I knew it faked and warped and desecrated and delusional and spitting mad. I knew it when it killed me to know it, to believe it to be true—”
“Describe it,” Dick challenges.
“I knew his face three years dead beneath a domino. I knew it as he carved a chunk of flesh from his own scalp and cursed my name…” His fingertips drift to a spot two inches behind his ear. Is that uneven texture the sign of a years-old scar, or just a tangle of hair?
(Or: Jason and Bruce get bodyswapped. It takes two full days for anyone to point it out to them.)
