A trap box. A proximity sensor. Two people who had no business being that close to each other, and approximately forty-five minutes that neither of them will account for properly to this day.
Asakura Shin can read every mind he has ever encountered. Every secret. Every ugly thought people think they've buried deep enough that no one will ever find them. He has spent his entire life knowing too much and being known by no one.
Nagumo Yoichi's mind is the only one that has ever been silent.
He is also, by every available metric, the most dangerous variable Shin has ever had the misfortune of being unable to ignore. He shows up at the shop with no good reason and stays too long. When Shin runs, he follows. Neither of them is sure why yet.
Shin tells himself it's annoying. He's wrong, and he knows it, and he keeps telling himself anyway.
Nagumo tells himself he has it under control. He is also wrong.
Everyone around them is exhausted.Still waters run deep.
This is not a love story.

“A lot better, Doc.”
“Can you tell me how it happened?”
“I… uh… tripped on a banana peel and fell down the stairs.”
“Pfft… You are so silly, Nagumo-san!”
“That’s why teachers usually say that you are supposed to pick up trash you see on the road, right?”
“That’s right.” Dr. Hana nods sagely before pulling out a piece of plastic candy from the bag, “And here is candy, for your tummy ache!”
“Thank you very much, Dr. Hana!”
... But he also only ever knew that the normal world was never made for him, for it is a world under a veil. He was born outside of that veil, living to slither in and out of it like an observer or an infiltrator— a stranger.

After the fight against the Grand Architect, Luuk notices some scratches on Rover's arm and immediately offers (Offer or threat - it's all the same) to treat them at the infirmary. But there, his walls finally come crumbling down as Rover uses the chance to obtain the answers they've desired for so long.
“You’re suffering in my presence, aren’t you?"
“…W…What?!” Luuk couldn’t stop the breathless laugh falling from his lips, his skin burning beneath these soft fingertips. Fingers with a touch so tender, so cruel. Swallowing hard, he tried to hold Rover’s gaze, even though he knew that it was a risk to his carefully crafted mask.
“That’s not true. I’m grateful for your return. No… Not only grateful, I-“

His fist clenched up against the candy in his hand, a pitiful attempt to brace himself for what was to come. It wasn’t enough.
“Of what good is a voice when it can speak no longer?”
Luuk barely suppressed the shaky sigh that begged to break free from his throat. “Right.”, he chuckled, even when the other couldn’t see it (and couldn’t be fooled by it either) “When a tool is of no use, it needs to be discarded.”

However, it's also been said that some of these reasons can be quite entirely arbitrary. The mental health watchlist was apparently a sham for just her amusement, idle chatting. Sudden vetting of research proposal and dissertation defenses were...probably along in the same vein, weren't they?
But, of course, the President has her favourites too, and...well. Professor Mornye is rather likeable, isn't she?

There was a soft sound behind Luuk, which knocked Luuk out of his thoughts. He glanced off to the side and smiled to himself. Think of the devil and he shall appear. Or something like that. A pair of arms wrapped around his waist and squeezed. Ah, bliss. A perfect moment.
His tone was as sweet as warm honey when he said, “Morning, you.”
There was a muffled “morning” from behind him. It seemed his partner wasn’t exactly awake yet and was nuzzling his back. How adorable.
Luuk lowered the heat on the food then stirred it once more and asked, “Hungry?”
He received a muffled grunt in response.
Seriously, was the guy trying to kill him with cuteness this morning? Luuk huffed softly then said, “Breakfast is almost ready so you can take a seat at the table if you want.”
