Summary
Essek is soft. His hands have but two calluses, right where he grips a quill. His skin is smooth and supple, well taken care of and kept away from the elements and the sunlight. Even his feet are soft, largely unused in public and usually at rest when in privacy.
Caleb is rough around the edges, used to battles and scars and pain. His hair is a bit coarser, his hands have heavy calluses all over, and there are bumps and scars all over the freckled skin from the harsh but short life he has led. He’s a beautiful painting, and Essek is a blank canvas. There’s potential there, probably, but without skill there’s doubt he’ll come close to such a masterpiece.
Essek is soft and he cannot deny this.
When he and Caleb were taken from his tower and thrown in a dungeon, halfway to unconscious, he started pulling things from his pockets, frantically. He knew these dungeons, could see the protective wards against divination, teleportation, and other means of contacting help or escaping. He knew they had little chance to survive, and worst of all he knew this was his fault.

It was the fear of a small child, or indeed, a stray cat—the fear of a creature trapped in a terrifying world it did not understand.
Essek, brilliant Essek, Essek who believed he could find the answers to everything, unable to understand a thing—the thought of it stabbed at Caleb’s heart.

Malevola has him pinned against her side, hanging onto him like she’s afraid he’s going to get swallowed by the drunken crowd. Sonar is on her other side, ears glowing faintly with the strobe lights as he knocks into her repeatedly.
Visi swings by, wipes the corner of his mouth, then disappears. Hot hands find his head a second- seconds? minutes? later. The flash of orange and black coming closer has him swaying dangerously to catch whatever Flambae starts to mutter against his ear. Something about shitty music?
Coop saunters past with a glint of metal, prying the empty tumbler from his hand. Punch Up appears with a full one to replace it. It makes his face flush when he takes a swig.
“Yo! Anyone seen Golem?” Prism pushes through. She’s got Waterboy by the wrist; She might be about to use him to purposely slip people and get them out of her way. Phenomaman is floating after them.
Visi comes back again, this time with Blazer holding on for dear life. They’re hugging like it’s the end of the world instead of just being drunk in a shitty bar. Blazer smiles, dimples showing. His vision swims.
The whiskey burns. So does the ache in his chest.

They were villains. They were fuck ups. They each had a giant chip on their shoulders that barely let them stand next to each other on a good day. As soon as his voice first came on the group call, they had to give him shit. If they didn’t start harassing him, the Blonde Boss Lady would have benched them thinking they were being mind controlled.
Every handler thought they could “handle” the Phoenix team. Tame them, make them palatable, water them down. Turn them good. So they didn’t like Robert.
But they did like his voice.

“I can take much more pain than you ever could, bitch!” Prism raised an eyebrow at Flambae as he stomped up to Robert like a child. “I’ve got fuckin’ powers, I’m naturally stronger, faster, and better than you, Mecha-bitch.”
Robert could feel the heat rolling off of Flambae’s body, drying his skin out where it touched him. He doesn’t quit with his rep as he turned, keeping count in his head as his deadpan expression locked onto the fiery superhuman.
“Wanna bet?” Flambae and Prism both perk up a little, Prism pulling her phone out and typing rapidly. Robert swapped the weight and started working on the other arm, ignoring the way his shoulder protested with a straight face.

Sky shouts and there’s hands on him, pulling him up, urging him along, but Legend points his mind toward the shield above them and keeps it there. He tries his best to mend the holes, to nudge his magic where it’s needed most; it’s cooing at him, worrying over him, over his heartbeat, over how much he’s already gone over the limit.
The vet mentally soothes it as he distantly feels his legs give out.

Mumbo didn’t full and truly panic until the moment that Grian passed out.
Concerned when he arrived to see his friend so clearly in pain? Sure. Upset to find out Grian had been hiding this from him for the entire season? Yeah. Nauseated when he saw the dark bruising and blood spread across Grian’s back? Yes. Bloody terrified when he thought Grian’s previous captors may have something to do with this? Absolutely.
But panic didn’t set in until Grian was slumped unconscious in his arms.

or, grian’s past with the watchers comes back to bite him in the form of his wings (and his mental state), mumbo wants to be a good friend, doc is traumatized, scar needs a break, xisuma and stress are just trying to keep them all alive, and pearl is… well, is she?
