“I’m still here, Max,” she whispers. There’s no one else here, so she could speak up if she wanted to, but the moment feels too private for that. Too vulnerable. “I haven’t left. None of us have.” Physically speaking this is a lie. People have come and gone and continued on without Max. But El does not hold this against them. She knows that, even if they are physically in their homes, they are still thinking about Max, hoping and waiting just like El. She is just doing it differently.
“I’m not going anywhere.” Her voice wavers a little bit, perhaps from a lack of use over the last few hours. “I’m staying right here, for as long as you need.”
