Summary
The asset's orders at the end of The Winter Soldier weren't to kill Captain America, but to capture him, so that he could be wiped and turned into another asset. The asset has succeeded in that mission, capturing its target and taking him back to the Hydra base. But the Hydra soldiers are dead, captured, or fled, so there is no one there to give the asset new orders.
Alone with its captive, the asset has no instructions on how it is meant to act. But the more time it spends with its target, the more old protocols start to assert themselves, like the protocol that when that face is hurt and bleeding, the asset is supposed to clean away the blood.

Barnes is now glaring at him for some reason. It's somewhat terrifying but also, oddly, a little reassuring— because that's emotion right there, which means there's still somebody behind those eyes. Somebody who seems to think Sam is being a bit slow on the uptake. "Time parameters exceeded. Mission failed."
"Wait." Sam narrows his eyes. "Is this some kind of... report? Debriefing?"
"Mission report," confirms Barnes, looking pleased. Well, looking slightly less murderous than before.
In which various people deal with things they never signed up for, but at the end of the day no one's particularly surprised.

Coffee shop AU that's not really a coffee shop AU. More of a coffee shop canon divergence. Fantastic writing, fantastic premise.

“You are a pale imitation of what I created, a cheap copy made from police reports, documentaries and true-crime books.”
The Corinthian saluted with two fingers to his temple.
“Yup.”
“And you are working at a coffee shop.”

“Ladies, gentlemen, and those who know better –”
The Corinthian reached out and caught a passing server by the arm, a dreamer half a head taller than he was and half again as broad. He slammed him to the ground dropping a knee to the center of his chest, and before he was done gasping, he had his pretty eyes out, one and two, shoving his shades up to pop them in.
Slowly, aware of the assembled Major Arcana holding their breaths, he rose to face the crowd again, two thin runnels of blood slipping down his face.
“–it’s so very nice to see you all again.”
