    Miles was 9 years old and didn’t get in trouble with his father when he didn’t want to wear a skirt or a dress. He didn’t understand it himself yet, why he sometimes thought he looked wrong in the mirror, or why the name people used for him didn’t fit him how he thought it should. He didn’t yet understand why he didn’t like certain clothes or why he gravitated towards boy things and boy activities. It didn’t matter yet, because Miles was young and carefree and happy with how things were for a while, and if everything wasn’t perfect yet then he knew there was more than enough time to figure it out later.

    Miles was 9 years old when he moved to Germany with Mr. Von Karma because his father was dead, and the old rules no longer applied to his life.
